Quick Answer

Under FCRA §611, you have the right to dispute any inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable information on your credit report. Credit bureaus must investigate within 30 days and correct or remove items that can’t be verified. Removing inaccurate negatives can boost your FICO score by 20–100+ points.

Your credit score is built from data in your credit report. If that data is wrong — and it is for millions of Americans — your score is wrong too. At Maximum FICO Score, based in Bakersfield, CA, error correction is one of the most impactful things we do for clients across Kern County, Los Angeles, and nationwide.

The Most Common Credit Report Errors

Wrong Personal Information

Misspelled name, wrong address, or a mixed file (another person’s data on your report).

Late Payment Reported Incorrectly

A payment made on time appears as late — one of the most damaging and common errors.

Account Not Yours

Could be identity theft, a mixed file, or an authorized user account impacting you negatively.

Duplicate Accounts

The same account appears twice — once from creditor and once from collection agency — doubling the damage.

Outdated Negative Items

Most negatives must be removed after 7 years. Items past this limit still appearing are errors.

Wrong Balance or Limit

A lower limit or higher balance than actual artificially inflates your utilization ratio.

How to Dispute Credit Report Errors: Step by Step

1
Get Your Free Credit Reports
Visit AnnualCreditReport.com. Pull all three: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The same error may appear on one, two, or all three independently.
2
Identify and Document Every Error
Review each report line by line. Note the exact account, incorrect information, and what the correct information should be. Gather supporting documentation.
3
Submit Your Dispute to Each Bureau
Each bureau has an online portal, but certified mail with documentation creates a paper trail. Under FCRA §611, your dispute must identify the item, explain why it’s inaccurate, and request correction.
4
Dispute with the Furnisher Directly
Under FCRA §623, you can also dispute with the company that reported the information. This dual-track approach is more effective for complex errors.
5
Await Investigation Results
Bureaus have 30 days to investigate. They must notify you in writing. If the item cannot be verified, it must be corrected or removed.
6
Review Results and Escalate if Needed
If a legitimate error wasn’t corrected, escalate to the CFPB or pursue legal remedies under FCRA §616–617.
